Started in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain is the only one meant for personal web pages only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to obtain john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought third-level domains remained active.
