Varnish is a website accelerator tool, which has been gaining a lot in popularity in recent years, as it can increase the speed of any website, sometimes even by one hundred percent, depending on the content. This tool is occasionally called an HTTP reverse proxy too and is used to reduce the overall load on the physical machine and to increase the access speed for the site visitors. Every time a visitor loads a page on a particular website, the browser request is handled by the web server and the requested info is sent as a response. If Varnish is activated, it caches the web pages that the site visitor browses and in case any of them is opened once again, it’s fetched by Varnish and not by the web server directly. The improvement in the performance comes from the fact that the accelerator processes the browser requests considerably quicker than any web server, which results in much faster browsing speeds for the visitors. In case any content is modified in the meantime, the cached pages will also be ‘refreshed’ the next time somebody accesses them.
